Q & A:

Q:  Do I need prior experience?
A:  No.  We will provide all training needed.

Q:  Will I have to pay for anything?
A:  No.  We provide all personal protective equipment and shirts.  (You may however pay for extra shirts if you wish)

Q:  When do calls come out?
A:  At all hours of the day on any day of the week.  Unfortunately there is no way to know when someone dials 911 and needs help.

Q:  How much time do I have to dedicate?
A:  We have training nights on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month from 1900 hours to 2100 hours excluding holidays.  Generally calls can take anywhere from 1 hour on up depending on the situation.  We ask our members to make as many calls as they can but we also understand family and work requirements.

Q:  What happens after I apply?
A:  A background check is ran and after it returns we will get with you.  You will be part of a new recuit class that lasts approximately 9 weeks training weekly during times that the group decides on.  New firefighters are on probation for 1 year.

Q:  I have firefighting experience.  Do I have to attend a new recruit class?
A:  This is case by case and will be decided by the officers.  Some people might be expedited through training to learn our department but is case by case.  1 year probation must still be completed.

Q:  Is there a quota for making calls?
A:  Currently there is not.  We do not want to put a quota unless we have to.

Q:  When do I get paid for making calls?
A:  We pay all firefighters at the annual Christmas party in December.

Q:  Will the experience I gain at Wheeler FD help me get hired on a full time department?
A:  Typically yes but this greatly depends on your overall attitude and approach.  Over the years we have had several of our firefighters move on to full time departments in the area and even other states.  We are here to help other's professional progress and reach their goals.  While we hate losing good firefighters we are proud to see them achieve their goals.
